Indoor location is usually based on permanent monitoring of a mobile element. This involves the deployment of an infrastructure with fixed sensors and mobile emitters that allows to know at all times where each element is on the map, which has a certain associated cost. However, in particular instances where it is not necessary to know where mobile assets are at all times, a reduced-cost solution can be adopted. In cases such as the occupation of parking spaces, we assume that it is enough to observe each place and discover which mobile element occupies it, not constantly following each vehicle. To do this, we deploy cameras that cover each place – cheaper than radio base stations – and read the license plate of the vehicle that occupies it -if it is the case- by means of OCR or ML recognition systems. With our solution, the infrastructure covers the customer’s need at a contained cost, as it removes the need for a car-tracking device installation.

The approach is very simple: if we have a good input image, through the use of image geofences and license plate recognition, we can declare a busy or free point and record the occupant’s license plate.
